You're doing WHAT after college?

July 25, 2015

In Septmeber of 2015, I will begin my time as a full-time missionary with Life Teen.

Life Teen is a movement within the Catholic church with the mission to bring teens closer to Christ (check out their website for more info). I've gotten lots of mixed reactions... some people are very excited for me... others have some... ummm..... "concerns."

"But you're such a great engineer, why would you throw that away?"
"You could make so much money as an Engineer!"
"When are you going to get a real job?"
"You need to be able to make a living."

All of these are very reasonable and understandable questions and statements. I get it, I REALLY REALLY DO. The decision to become a full-time missionary has directly contradicted everything that the world has told me about success for years. But how silly would it have been if St. Peter was like, "Ya know what, they're right. I am a great fisherman. Jesus, I think I'll pass on this real and personal call you have given me. I think I'll just stay here in my boat and fish, because its what I've been planning to do." That would have been problematic.

If you would have told me two years ago that I was going to be a full time missionary after college, I would have laughed...

Not because it seemed impossible, but more because it seemed unlikely. I just graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Have you heard of any Biomedical Engineers recently who became missionaries? Yeah, me either.

The summer between my sophomore and junior year of college changed my life. While serving as a summer missionary at Covecrest in Tiger, Georgia, I had a real and powerful encounter with the love of God. In just six weeks, my entire perspective of life and my purpose was altered.

Why am I doing this? Why am I abandoning the stability of full-time employment to become a missionary? Christ's call is different for everyone, but God has called me to reach out to teenagers in a radical and counter-cultural way. I'm doing this because I firmly believe in the mission of Life Teen.

Sure, it may have looked irresponsible to the bystander for a perfectly sufficient and capable man to abandong everything and follow a carpenter. But I know the really irresponsiblity, both in St. Peter's life and in mine, would have been to ignore Christ's call.

I know you can think of at least one person in your life who is searching for Truth.

Maybe it's your son or daughter, a friend, a neice or nephew. I want to bring Christ to the people who walk in darkness, I want to bring joy to those who struggle to find a reason to get up in the morning. I want to help Christ rebuild and renew His church. That is what I'm foresaking all else for.... and I want you to join me.

1. Prayer: PLEASE PRAY FOR ME. this is gonna be a really beautiful but challenging year. I'm moving halfway across the country and I only am able to come home for a couple days at Christmas, and a couple days at Easter. Please pray for all the teens I will be serving, the other young adults I will be working with, and my family!

2. Partner: I need to raise $2,280 a month to be able to be a part of this mission (the breakdown of mission partners I need to hit that goal is in the picture below). I am asking for you to consider donating to my mission on a monthly basis. Would you consider donating in a monthly to help teens grown closer to Christ? Check out my donation page here: donate.lifeteen.com/astgermain

3. Pass it on: Please share this exciting new journey with your family. Tell them about your friend Aimee who is following God's call to be a missionary, who wants to bring Christ to the hearts of teens. I would love if you could share this with your family and anyone else who would be willing to pray for me and sponsor me financially.

I humbly ask for your support, for your prayers. Jesus is calling us all to get out of our boats, to abandon our selves for the sake of the kingdom. Your call may not look like mine, but how is he calling you today? I would be honored if you would join my on this mission to bring teens to Christ.
